ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF THE ELDERLY
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Course Title: Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly
Target Audience: Active Police Officers and Community members
Length of Training: Eight Hours (8hrs.) In-service Credit
Delivery Format: Interactive/Lecture
Course Purpose: To provide basic knowledge, identification, statutory requirements, intervention and communication skills for law enforcement officers and other public service personnel in dealing with victims and suspects of abuse and neglect of the elderly.
At the completion of this eight-hour block of instruction, the student should have an understanding of and be able to and will:
- Learn the basics of the aging process and statistical data on abuse and neglect
- Learn the basic skills to assist them in identifying those who are suffering from abuse or neglect
- Learn key indicators in identifying those who abuse or neglect the elderly
- Examine WV Statutes concerning elder abuse and neglect to identify key requirements for prosecution of those who abuse or neglect the elderly
- Learn practical skills in communicating with the elderly
- Discuss and learn to develop resources in dealing with abuse and neglect of the elderly
- Gain insight into the requirements of each public service agency responsible for investigation and prosecution of elder abuse and neglect crimes, how to work productively together to provide quality services to the elderly, and recognize the importance of partnership development concerning these crimes.
