Course Objectives
Course Title: Responding to Domestic Violence
Target Audience: Active Police Officers and Community members
Length of Training: Eight Hours (8hrs.) In-service Credit
Delivery Format: Interactive/Lecture
Course Purpose: The objectives of the course are as follows:
· To enhance and refine the student’s understanding of the term “culture”, especially rural culture – and its importance in responding to law enforcement response to domestic violence.
· To understand the importance of the initial call taker in eliciting critical domestic violence information, and know how to preserve and use the evidence obtained.
· To provide tactical strategies for safety of officer, victim, suspect and children. Crime scene control and safe scene management.
· To understand the dynamics of domestic violence and how they affect the law enforcement response.
· To enhance Interview and Interrogation Techniques. And understanding that rules of evidence apply in domestic violence cases the same as any other crime.
· To help officer students to understand the importance of a well written report and emphasize the multiple readings and uses of the report and the importance of documentation in domestic violence incidents.
· Students will be able to serve civil papers and effect warrant arrests more safely and effectively.
· Ascertain a broader understanding and demonstrate knowledge of courthouse security and its importance to law enforcement officers response to domestic violence.
· Students will have the knowledge, skills, and resources to enable law enforcement agencies, regardless of size, to develop and implement policies and protocols directing their department’s response to domestic violence issues.
· Students will be able to identify the appropriate coordinated community response and community oriented policing strategies, which will enhance victim safety and offender accountability.
· Demonstrate how to build partnerships between domestic violence advocates, community agencies, law enforcement and individuals to effectively collaborate in a coordinated response.
· Students will have an action plan for how to influence the response to domestic violence in their community.
