Course Objectives

Course Title: Police Officer Professionalism (Ethics and Integrity)

Target Audience: Active Police Officers and Community members

Length of Training: Eight Hours (8hrs.) In-service Credit

Delivery Format: Interactive/Lecture

Course Purpose: The objectives of the course are as follows:

· To enhance and refine the student’s understanding of the meaning of professionalism.

· To provide an examination of the increasing value placed upon professional behavior within modern organizations.

· To re-foster the student’s appreciation of the very special importance of professionalism in the performance of the law enforcement function.

· To provide an examination of the concept of “legitimacy.” The recognition and willingness to defer to a person’s “authority” to initiate action(s), or to direct activities, regardless of that person’s official position and the badges and symbols thereof.

· To remind officer students of the hollowed goals of law enforcement.

· To enhance officer student recollections of their very special status within the political and social systems of the United States.

· To help officer students recall what they already know about professionalism in law enforcement.
